This series of watercolor paintings explore the relationship between vintage ideals and feminine roles. The compilation of images is structured to entice the viewer into the paradox of a woman’s experience.
My works are thematically linked to classical Victorian values as seen through the influence of female gender roles. These roles were not merely expressed by societal hierarchy but also exemplified by women’s fashion. The century had produced highly restrictive articles of women’s clothing including bustles, polonaises, crinolines, abundant frills and furbelows of every description.
I create watercolor paintings, which offer symbolic interpretations of sensuality and Victorian idealism, amongst a cool color palette. Although, my inspiration is taken from vintage concepts and “times long gone”, the works are meant to solidify ideas that still exist. My artwork speaks, not only for current societal roles, but also for people who were long ago silenced. Linking the concepts of hegemony amongst the sexes as well as societal influences of refinement and constriction, my works examine a delicate beauty shrouded in restraint.
